THE MYSTERY OF THE PERFECT SCISSORS

I’ve been back at full speed in my workshop for about a month. As if by magic, during winter something happened to my trusty scissors, something that made them stop cutting like I was used to… they no longer sliced through fabric like a knife through butter… PANIC! You get it, I’m not talking about just any scissors… I’m talking about The Scissors, my Scissors par excellence. I thought I’d get them fixed soon and use another pair in the meantime – after all, if there’s one thing I’m not short of, it’s scissors. But nothing worked – I’ve never enjoyed cutting so little as I did that week!

    Feeling at Home

Even though the scissors that replaced my beloved pair were perfect, I didn’t feel at “home” with them, and that’s when I realized how essential it is to feel at home when sewing, whether you do it professionally or as a hobby! When choosing the right sewing accessories, get advice from those who know more, but above all, pick things up and try them out. Scissors, for example, all have different grips, different weights, different blade lengths, and different points. What works perfectly for me might not work equally well for you. Each of us has different hands, different lever lengths, and different postural habits. Try holding as many as possible and simulate cutting, but above all, don’t underestimate choosing the right scissors – it’s as important as choosing the right sewing machine for you.

    Skis or Scissors?

It’s a bit like skiing – there are 1,000 different types of skis, but the right ski for you is one and only one, and it’s connected to so many factors that make you feel at “home” on those skis. The next time you grip a pair of scissors and cut a piece of fabric, I invite you to pay attention to all the details, to understand if the blade sinks into the fabric as it should, if it glides smoothly and makes a gentle sound. If it doesn’t cut properly, I assure you that the joy you feel while doing this operation is much less than what you could experience with scissors worthy of the name.

    The Holy Grail

If you realize they’re not cutting properly, get them fixed or treat yourself to a new pair – I’m sure you won’t regret it. You can find them at various price points, but honestly, I wouldn’t go for the cheapest ones, because often with that money you’d be better off doing something else (having a beer with friends, for example…). And if you finally find the right scissors for you, protect them like your Holy Grail, hide them from children, husbands, and everyone else!! They are YOUR Scissors. They are THE Scissors. Protect them, because only then will the result of your work be perfect from every perspective. Because only then will what you’ve created with your hands truly enrich life. Because only then will you feel at “home”. Have you already found your heart’s scissors? If you’d like to tell us which ones, or if you have useful tips, I’m all ears.
